Basic of Solar Panels

What is Solar panel?

As most you know that solar panels are used to harvest electricity from sun light.

Solar panels is made by array of solar cells (i.e. parallel and series combinations of solar cell). Since solar cells are very vulnerable (i.e. easy to break), this array of solar cell is protected by lamination, toughen glass and aluminium alloy frame.

Although the solar cells themselves are very vulnerable—in fact, they are only a few millimeters thick—the glass and frame that surrounds them is very sturdy and durable.

Solar panels are designed to endure even the most severe weather conditions. From 90+ mile per hour wind to medium sized tree limbs to golf ball sized (or larger) hail, solar panels have been specifically tested and designed to withstand any impacts.

A good general guideline for determining how durable a solar panel is against impact is if it will break your roof, it will break your solar panels—but if something large enough to break your roof has impacted your home, there is a good chance you have bigger things to be concerned about!

 

Type of solar panels

There are three type of solar panels Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline & Thin Film.

Monocrystalline

Solar cells made of monocrystalline silicon (mono-Si), also called single-crystalline silicon (single-crystal-Si), are quite easily recognizable by an external even coloring and uniform look, indicating high-purity silicon, as you can see on the picture below:

Polycrystalline

The first solar panels based on polycrystalline silicon, which also is known as polysilicon (p-Si) and multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si), were introduced to the market in 1981. Unlike monocrystalline-based solar panels, polycrystalline solar panels do not require the Czochralski process. Raw silicon is melted and poured into a square mold, which is cooled and cut into perfectly square wafers.

A good way to separate Monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels is that polycrystalline solar cells look perfectly rectangular with no rounded edges.”

 

 

Thin-Film Solar Cells (TFSC)

Depositing one or several thin layers of photovoltaic material onto a substrate is the basic gist of how thin-film solar cells are manufactured. They are also known as thin-film photovoltaic cells (TFPV). The different types of thin-film solar cells can be categorized by which photovoltaic material is deposited onto the substrate:

  • Amorphous silicon (a-Si)

  • Cadmium telluride (CdTe)

  • Copper indium gallium selenide (CIS/CIGS)

  • Organic photovoltaic cells (OPC)

 

 

Comparison between different type of solar panels

Monocrystalline solar panels have the highest efficiency rates and space efficient but its price is also upto 50% higher than that of Polycrystalline.”

 

If the Monocrystalline solar panel is partially covered with shade, dirt or snow, the entire circuit can break down.”

 

Thin-film solar panels are in general not very useful for in most residential situations. They are cheap, but they also require a lot of space.”

 

Thin-film solar panels Can be made flexible, which opens up many new potential applications.”

 

We (SORALITEPOWER) recommend Polycrystalline type solar panels for both residential & commercial use because its very cost efficient and can be available in less time. The initial cost of solar power pant is high and its payback period is 5 year. The use of Monocrystalline solar panel will increase the initial price plant and also its not suitable for most of roof-tops, because of its entire circuit will shutdown if it partially covered with shade, dirt or snow.”

 

Price of Solar panels

This price of solar panels can goes from 26 Indian rupees per WATT to 35 rupess per WATT. Its depends upon the rating and the quantity if solar panels required. For rating of 315W and above the price are lower than the price of solar panels of rating below 315W.
